Principal's Letter ~ 6/6/14
Dear Peacham School families and friends,
It’s quieter than usual today with our newly graduated 6th graders off on their class trip to Burlington. The ceremony last evening was another affirmation of the strong commitment of this community to support its’ children. There were many folks attending who didn’t have a family connection to our special 6th graders. The cafeteria was full to overflowing with younger classmates, staff, and well-wishers to make it a special evening for all of us.
Before we are even finished this year we are already making plans to shape our instructional program for the future. With the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and Literacy and the Next Generation Science Standards to guide us, we are making plans to identify Peacham Elementary as a STEAM school. This will mean a strong emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, anchored by the Arts. The essential thread that will hold all this together will be our ongoing commitment to the best literacy program possible, PK-6.
In addition to project-based classroom instruction, we will once again look to the 21C Program to provide extended learning opportunities. Mr. G. promises he will be back to lead lots of cool projects while Miss Elizabeth will take over the coordinating job.
This is the final Friday newsletter of the year. A student left a post-it on my door a while ago: “I don’t think we’re going to finish all of this.” Well, there’s always next year to keep on towards our goals. We’re heading in the right direction.
Cheers to all, Judy Ross
Our five week summer program will be offered beginning July 7 and run until August 8, from 8:30AM – 4:00PM. at the Barnet School, for Barnet and Peacham students; and at the Danville School, for Danville and Walden students. Ongoing daily activities for the five weeks will include fun in the flower and vegetable gardens, a variety of art and crafts, cooking yumminess in the kitchen, board and outdoor team games, taking a look and listen out on the nature trails, and staying cool with yoga. Field trips will find us exploring the lakes, pond and rivers, visiting local mills and other historic sites, and having a great time in such special places as the Montshire Museum. We are currently scheduling two weeks of swimming lessons which will give us the chance to get away, get wet, and cool off.
Bus service between 8:00AM – 8:30AM will gather students in Peacham and Walden for delivery at the Barnet and Danville Schools. Afternoon bus service will pick up at each school and return Peacham and Walden students to their point of origin between 3:30PM – 4:00PM (locations not yet identified). A healthy lunch and snack will be provided. Choice of activities and registration information will be sent home with students prior to the spring break.
